What is ADHD?

What is ADHD?

ADHD means Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder.

It is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which means the brain works differently in attention, focus, and self-control.
ADHD is not laziness. It is a real condition that affects children, teens, and adults.

Types of ADHD (DSM-5-TR)

There are 3 types:

1️⃣ Inattentive Type

People struggle with focus, forget things, skip details, and get distracted easily.

2️⃣ Hyperactive / Impulsive Type

People feel very active, talk a lot, act without thinking, or feel “on the go”.

3️⃣ Combined Type

A mix of both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms.

Symptoms:

Inattentive Symptoms

  • Difficulty staying focused

  • Losing things

  • Forgetting tasks

  • Getting distracted easily

  • Trouble finishing work

  • Difficulty organizing things

Hyperactive & Impulsive Symptoms

  • Fidgeting, moving a lot

  • Talking too much

  • Acting before thinking

  • Difficulty waiting for their turn

  • Feeling restless

  • Interrupting others

Causes of ADHD:

ADHD does not happen because of bad parenting or laziness.
Common causes include:

  • Brain chemistry differences

  • Genetics (runs in families)

  • Pregnancy or birth complications

  • Early childhood factors

Treatment (DSM-5-TR Based):

ADHD treatment usually includes:

Medicines

Doctors may give stimulant or non-stimulant medicines to improve focus and reduce impulsivity.

Therapy

  • Behavior therapy

  • CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

  • Parent training (for kids)

Lifestyle Changes

  • Routine

  • Sleep

  • Exercise

  • Healthy diet

School or Work Support

  • Extra time

  • Simple instructions

  • Organized workspace

Coping Strategies (Simple and Helpful)

Here are strategies people love to save and comment on:

  • Make a daily routine

  • Use reminders and to-do lists

  • Break tasks into small steps

  • Use alarms for time management

  • Keep a clean study/work area

  • Do short breaks between tasks

  • Exercise to release energy

  • Practice mindfulness and breathing

Breaking the Stigma:

ADHD doesn’t mean:

  • “Lazy”

  • “Not serious”

  • “Not intelligent”

Many people with ADHD are:
🌟 highly creative
🌟 energetic
🌟 innovative
🌟 problem-solvers

Let’s educate, not judge.
Let’s support, not shame.

Motivation:

“ADHD is not a weakness — it is a different way of thinking. With the right support, routine, and tools, anyone with ADHD can learn, grow, and shine. Recovery is not about becoming ‘normal’; it’s about becoming your best self.”

Or:

“ADHD doesn’t stop your success. Understanding, structure, and self-love can make your journey powerful. You are stronger than your struggles.”
